Demis Volpi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and began his ballet training at the age of four. He continued his training with Andrea Candela, Wilhelm Burmann and Mario Gallizi before studying at the Escuela de Danza del Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón. He graduated from the Ballet School of Canada in Toronto in 2002 and received an Academy Diploma from the John Cranko School in Stuttgart in 2004. Volpi joined the Stuttgart Ballet as an apprentice in 2004 and was taken into the corps de ballet the following season. At the Stuttgart Ballet, he danced both classical and modern repertoire and has created roles in Marco Goecke’s Suite Suite Suite, Viciouswishes, Goecke at the Chamber:
The Nutcracker and Orlando, as well as in Two at a Time by Cayetano Soto.

Volpi began choreographing in 2006 when he created On and On and On for the Noverre Society’s “Young Choreographers” program at the State Theater Stuttgart. He also choreographed Swish (2007), Palpable Leers (2008) and From Me to You (2009) for the program. In 2007, he was named “Young Choreographer to Watch” by ballettanz magazine and his Swish was taken into the Stuttgart Ballet’s repertoire. Together with Bridget Breiner, Volpi created The Broadway Baby for Stuttgart Ballet Artistic Director Reid Anderson’s 60th Birthday gala in 2009.

Volpi’s first commission for the Stuttgart Ballet, Big Blur, premiered at the Play House Theatre Stuttgart on March 31, 2009. In 2011, he won The Erik Bruhn Prize for Best Choreography for his pas de deux Little Monsters. He has also worked with the State Opera Stuttgart, choreographing its productions of La Juive in 2008 and Teseo in 2009.

Private Light was Volpi’s first work for American Ballet Theatre.
