Harriet Clark is a native New Yorker, though
she began her training at the Houston Ballet School. She received
her professional training at the School of American Ballet. While
still a student at the school she was chosen to perform with Makarova
and Company on Broadway, and danced as a soloist in ballets with
Cynthia Gregory, Anthony Dowell, Fernando Bujones, as well as
Natalia Makarova who was the Artistic Director. Later that year
she joined American Ballet Theatre, then under the directorship
of Mikhail Baryshnikov. After several years Ms. Clark left ABT
to dance as a soloist in The Pacific Northwest Ballet. At both
companies she performed not only the classics, but also in the
works of George Balanchine, Paul Taylor, Jose Limon, Anthony Tudor,
and Twyla Tharp. Recently, Ms. Clark retired after many years
in the position of Dance Captain and Swing of the Broadway Production
of The Phantom of the Opera. As such she not only performed
a number of roles but also taught and maintained all the choreography
and musical staging in the show. Ms. Clark is a Certified and
Affiliate teacher in the American Ballet Theatre National Training
Curriculum. She is both an examiner and currently helps to teach
the Training Curriculum. She is on the Faculty of the Jacqueline
Kennedy Onassis School in both the Pre-Professional Division and
in the Children’s Division. She teaches in many of the ABT
Educational Outreach programs; at the ABTKids workshops at the
Metropolitan Opera House and City Center; and at the ABT Summer
Intensive.
