Ballet for the New Audience
In January 2008, ABT launched Ballet for the New Audience, a workshop series devoted to educating and developing young audiences in private schools. BNA is an extension of ABT’s award-winning Make a Ballet, a student-driven program that exposes and enriches participants through the creation of an original dance production.

The three-workshop creative residency pairs arts professionals with students. All residencies take place in the schools and conclude with a final creative workshop in ABT studios with an observation of a rehearsal with ABT II or the JKO School, a design project with a costume designer, and a presentation of their work in a studio setting.

The goals for BNA are to:
  • Introduce classical ballet to young people.
  • Foster an appreciation for the ballet and the performing arts.
  • Develop and educate future dance audiences.

Schools participating in the 2008 Ballet for the New Audience are:
  • Brick Church School, New York, NY
  • Brearley School, New York, NY
  • The Buckley School, New York, NY
  • Claremont Children’s School, New York, NY
  • The Nightingale-Bamford School, New York, NY

For more information, please contact Dennis Walters, Director of Educational Outreach, at (212) 477-3030, ext. 1065, or via e-mail at dwalters@abt.org.

The program is supported by a generous lead gift from Lisa Cashin with additional funding provided by Vivian B. Chambers, Brenda DePaola, Diane DiMenna and Elizabeth Kahane.

Thanks and praise for BNA:

“It was a truly wonderful experience. The workshop is by far the best I’ve seen as an educator for the past 13 years.”

Dianne Williams, M.S., Assistant Director, Claremont Children's School

“You mirror our belief that every child can find a way to succeed if we address their strengths and build on them.”

Blanche G. Mansfield, Head of Lower School, The Nightingale-Bamford School
