Raphael Spyker was born in Bahia, Brazil, and moved to Rio de Janeiro when he was four years old. He began his training at the age of twelve at the Centro de Danca do Rio de Janeiro, and continued at the Escola de Danca Alice Arja under the direction of Alice Arja. In 2009, Spyker joined the Cia de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro, under the direction of Alice Arja. In the summers of 2010 and 2012, Spyker attended the Miami City Ballet Summer Intensive, under the direction of Edward Villella on full scholarship, and was subsequently awarded a full scholarship to attend the school year round.
He participated in numerous competitions including the Entreatos International de Danca in Rio de Janeiro in 2012, where he earned a scholarship to attend the ABT JKO School. Spyker was awarded a full scholarship to ABT’s New York Summer Intensive in 2013, and became a member of the ABT Studio Company in that same year.
As a member of the ABT Studio Company, Spyker performed with The Royal Ballet/ABT Studio Company Exchange and danced roles in ABT’s Metropolitan Opera House Gala, Alexei Ratmansky’s Carnival of the Animals and other pieces choreographed by Raymond Lukens.
He joined American Ballet Theatre as an apprentice in December 2014 and became a member of the corps de ballet in February 2015.
