ABT: AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE AMERICA'S NATIONAL BALLET COMPANY®
Moments in Time

When the curtain at the Center Theater went up on January 11, 1940, those privileged enough to be in the audience watched history being made. The Company, which then billed itself as “AMERICA’S FIRST BALLET THEATRE STAGED BY THE GREATEST COLLABORATION IN HISTORY,” was about to set a new course in American dance. American Ballet Theatre, soon to be a crown jewel in the world wide arts community, was born.

When Richard Pleasant founded American Ballet Theatre, his goal was to develop a repertoire of the best ballets from the past and to encourage the creation of new works by gifted young choreographers. During its first 40 years, under the direction of Lucia Chase and Oliver Smith, that goal was met with a range of works unmatched in history. In the pursuit of such an extraordinary repertoire, ABT has commissioned works by the great choreographic geniuses of our time. The Company has also been home to the world’s most esteemed dancers, designers and composers. Since its inception, ABT has provided a forum for literally thousands of artists who have come together under the auspices of this single dynamic institution in pursuit of artistic perfection.

The following is a series of photographs chosen to show some of American Ballet Theater’s Spectacular repertoire and people that have made the Company what it is today.
