Synopsis

Souvenir d'un lieu cher, which translates to "memory of a dear place" was written for violin and piano by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky between March and May 1878. It consists of three movements, Meditation, Scherzo and Melodie.

The Dutch National Ballet premiered this piece in their 2011-2012 season, as a part of the anniversary programme Present/s. At its premiere it was received with unanimous praise. In 2012, The Financial Times praised "With Souvenir d'un lieu cher, Ratmansky has given Dutch National Ballet a miniature jewel for two couples, so ripe with emotion it seems to compress several novels into 14 minutes... the rich, lush texture and sinuous expressivity of the choreography matched Tchaikovsky's concerto every step of the way."
