American Ballet Theatre mourns the passing of Florence Pettan, a beloved
symbol of stability for the Company through five decades of behind-the-scenes
support for the Artistic Director and the entire institution. Lucia
Chase’s original and only assistant during her forty-year tenure,
and Coordinator for the Artistic Staff under Mikhail Baryshnikov, Jane
Hermann and Kevin McKenzie, Florence provided a discreet and steady
handling of virtually all the artistic planning. Her wry sense of humor
added a sound sense of perspective in the execution of her duties. Florence
became a caring friend to each and every person she worked with –
artist and staff member alike.
A memorial service for Florence will be held on May 7
at ABT’s 890 Broadway
studios. On June 13, ABT will dedicate its performance at the Metropolitan
Opera House in honor of Florence’s life and work.
