New York Summer Intensive Counselor

Classification: Counselor, Summer Intensive

General Description:

The Summer Intensive Counselor will assist with all aspects of American Ballet Theatre’s New York City Summer Intensive Program from June 25 – July 27, 2018.  This position works closely with the Summer Intensive Director, faculty, students and ABT administrative staff.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with a group of 30-35 students attending the New York Summer Intensive to monitor behavior, attendance and general well being of the students.
  • Assist Summer Intensive staff with planning and daily activities of New York City Summer Intensive such as schedules, faculty changes, rehearsals, studio showings, data entry, daily attendance, health of students, etc.
  • Communicate with parents, students, and faculty regarding Summer Intensive schedules, student attendance and final performance information.
  • Act as an on-site chaperone to report any physical or psychological issues or problems that arise with the student body.
  • Monitors dancers’ conduct and behavior and reports any problems or concerns to the Summer Intensive Manager.
  • Chaperone students on the subway to the ABT Summer Intensive final performance and work closely with Production staff to ensure a smooth dress rehearsal and performance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

Seeking college dance and arts administration students.  Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work productively with artists.  Experience interacting with students and parents.  Ability to manage multiple activities in a pressured environment.  Must be at least a sophomore in college.   Knowledge of dance and performing arts is a requirement.  Due to a high percentage of international students, proficiency in multiple languages is a plus.

Summer Intensive Manager

Compensation:

Honorarium of $200 per/week.  Counselors may participate in ballet technique class with their assigned group when other responsibilities do not interfere.  Housing and travel are not provided.

California Summer Intensive Counselor

American Ballet Theatre is seeking resident counselors, males and females, for the Orange County Summer Intensive Program.  Counselors will reside on the University of California, Irvine campus and supervise young male and female dancers ages 12-18 from July 23 – August 10, 2018.  Counselors will be on duty for the entire duration of the program.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Enforce dormitory rules and curfews.
  • Plan and organize dorm activities (e.g. movie and game nights).
  • Accompany students to and from the studios and cafeteria and on off-site weekend trips.
  • Assist in the Summer Intensive office (e.g. posting weekly schedules; escorting students to medical appointments; arrangements for the final performance).
  • Maintain a positive and supportive environment for ABT students.
  • Communicate with parents, students, and faculty regarding Summer Intensive schedules, student attendance and final performance information.
  • Act as an on-site chaperone to report any physical or psychological issues or problems that arise with the student body.
  • Monitors dancers’ conduct and behavior and reports any problems or concerns to the Summer Intensive Office.
  • Work closely with Production staff to ensure a smooth dress rehearsal and performance at the end of the program.

Seeking highly motivated college students, recent college graduates, or equivalent.  Previous chaperone and counselor experience and/or work with teenagers, dancers, and education programs are preferred.  Due to a high percentage of international students, proficiency in multiple language is a plus.  Counselors must reside on the University of California, Irvine campus for the duration of the position from Saturday, July 21, 2018 to Saturday, August 11, 2018.  Counselors must provide their own means of transportation to and from Irvine.  Counselors are expected to be on duty at all times, and there will be only limited off time available. Must have completed one year of college or be at least 19 years of age.

Counselors will receive room and board consisting of a single room, three meals a day, and a salary of $1200

Telefunding Representative

ABT seeks part-time representatives to work with our telefundraising vendor for American Ballet Theatre’s fundraising campaign. We’re looking for reliable, articulate representatives to generate support for ABT’s membership programs.

Applicants must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Evening and weekend shifts are available. ABT offers flexible scheduling, a friendly work environment, and the opportunity to help support America’s National Ballet Company®. You’ll earn an hourly base pay plus commission.

Position Qualifications:

Telephone skills and basic computer skills are necessary. Sales or fundraising experience, knowledge of classical ballet, and/or appreciation for the arts is a plus.

Dancers

Pre-Primary and Primary levels at the ABT JKO School are open enrollment and no prior dance experience is required. Placement in each level is based solely on student’s date of birth.

Auditions are required for students intending to enroll in Levels 1A-3 of the ABT JKO School for the 2018-2019 school year. These levels are for students ages seven to twelve with previous ballet training. All interested students must participate in the open audition class on Saturday, May 5, 2018. Pre-registration will open in Spring 2018.

Acceptance to the Pre-Professional Division of the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School is by audition only. Prospective students may audition by attending an open audition, submitting a video audition, or by attending an ABT Summer Intensive.

Auditions are open to all male and female students who have achieved intermediate or advanced levels of ballet training. Young Dancer Summer Workshop applicants must be between 9 and 11 years old, or 12-year-olds at the beginning pointe level.

Space in ABT Studio Company is extremely limited. Open Auditions for the 2018-2019 season will take place during the ABT Summer Intensive National Audition Tour in New York and San Francisco. Video auditions are accepted year-round.

Internships at ABT

American Ballet Theatre’s Internship Program was established in Fall 2010 to provide pre-professional nonprofit work experience for university students and recent graduates. To further expand ethnic and cultural diversity in classical ballet, ABT is committed to facilitating inclusive programs through its Project Plié initiative.

Each year, approximately 30 interns join the ABT family, where they partner with a mentor and gain valuable work experience in their areas of interest.

In addition to working with their mentors, interns participate in weekly meetings that promote professional development and provide opportunities to hear from leaders within the organization. Interns may also assist with a variety of special events; gaining exposure to important figures in the arts community.
