ABT JKO School Student Spotlight:
Emilie Trauchessec

In 2011, Emilie Trauchessec auditioned and was accepted to the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School Children’s Division.  Emilie came to ABT at nine years old from The American Youth Dance Theater, where members of their faculty are certified in ABT’s National Training Curriculum and students are presented for ABT Examinations.  Since coming to the ABT JKO School over eight years ago, Emilie has progressed through the ABT training ladder from Children’s Division to the Pre-Professional Division, with ABT Summer Intensives in between and annual appearances onstage with both the ABT JKO School and ABT’s main Company!

2012 - ABT JKO School Children’s Division Level 3A

“When I first arrived at the JKO School, I was very nervous since I previously danced in a small ballet school.  However, all the teachers and staff welcomed me with open arms.  After my first year as a student, I already knew that I would want to come back for many years to follow.”

2014 - Rondo Capriccioso

“I had the amazing opportunity to perform in Rondo Capriccioso, a ballet that Alexei Ratmansky choreographed on the students for the 10th Anniversary of the ABT JKO School and we performed on the Opening Night Gala at the David H Koch Theater in both 2014 and 2016.   Working with Mr. Ratmansky was an incredible experience.  He paid attention to every detail and he made sure that everyone felt included in the piece.”

2014 - The Nutcracker

“The third time I performed in Mr. Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker, I was cast as ‘Clara.’  When I found out, I was very excited and also slightly nervous.  However, throughout the rehearsal process, the Company was very welcoming which helped me gain confidence and simply enjoy the performance.”

2016 - Character Dance Demonstration at The Joyce Theater

“In the ABT JKO School we train in a variety of disciplines.  This has taught me to quickly adapt to new styles, as well as keep an open mind while learning new choreography.”

2016 - Boyce, choreographed by Franco De Vita (former Artistic Director of the ABT JKO School)

“Working with Mr. De Vita is an experience that I will never forget.  Not only did he push me to do my best, but he also made sure I was always smiling and having fun.”

2017 - Paquita Performance at the Kaye Playhouse

“Being in the Pre-Professional Division Upper-2 level with Ms. [Cynthia] Harvey has taught me a lot.  Ms. Harvey always focuses on technique but also the importance of stage presence.  I am thankful for all the knowledge she has passed on to me.  I consider the JKO School my second home as I have made lifelong friends and countless memories that I will cherish forever.”

2019 - ABT JKO School Children's Division Class Assistant

“Being a class assistant in the Children’s Division is very rewarding.  I love watching the young dancers grow individually as dancers, but also through their interactions with one another.  I really enjoy passing on everything I have learned to the students and seeing all their progress.”

Upcoming Performances

Come see Emilie and the future generations of American ballet this month when the JKO School presents a series of performances at The Joyce Theater and NYU Skirball in both original choreography and classical excerpts.  In her final performances with the ABT JKO School, Emilie will perform with the Pre-Professional Division at The Joyce on April 26 and 27 in George Balanchine’s Donizetti Variations and Jerome Robbins’s Interplay.  She will then join our youngest Pre-Primary students on stage at NYU Skirball on April 28 in their performances featuring music by Riccardo Drigo.
