Kyle Abraham’s first work for American Ballet Theatre presents and highlights our dancers in his unique style, with dynamic phrase work and an interweaving of classical and contemporary vocabularies. This thoughtful, witty work propels ABT’s dancers to new realms, revealing a side to them that will surprise and excite our audiences.
Created in pandemic times by Alexei Ratmansky for ABT Principals James Whiteside and Isabella Boylston, Neo challenged the dancers to reclaim their stamina after months of isolation. This pas de deux is being presented in live performance for the first time. Alternately playful and daring, fevered and sensuous, the choreography is matched by the bold yet delicate sounds of the shamisen, the Japanese stringed-instrument which accompanies them in a piece by composer Dai Fujikura.
Created for Ballet Theatre in 1947, this George Balanchine classic is one of his most iconic works, requiring shimmering technique and heroic stamina. Set to Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky’s glorious score, Theme and Variations evokes the golden age of Russian classical ballet.
