Anne Milewski Cary

Anne Milewski Cary began her ballet training at the Midwest Ballet Academy in Illinois under the direction of Mim Eichmann.  At 16 years old, Cary accepted a full scholarship to the School of American Ballet and moved to New York City. While at SAB, she created original roles for new works by Christopher Wheeldon and Nilas Martins.  At the School’s 1995 Spring Performances, Cary danced the soloist role in George Balanchine’s La Source, as well as roles in The Four Temperaments and Bournonville’s Napoli.

In 1996, Cary joined American Ballet Theatre as an apprentice, and was promoted to the corps de ballet in August of the same year. Throughout her 15-year career dancing with American Ballet Theatre, she danced on stages all around the world and worked with many leading choreographers and dancers such as Twyla Tharp, Natalia Makarova, and Gelsey Kirkland.  She danced in dozens of classical and contemporary ballets, including many featured, soloist, and leading roles.  Some of her repertoire includes:  Little Swans in Kevin McKenzie’s Swan Lake, the Italian Princess in Swan Lake, the Flirt Girl in Swan Lake, Mercutio’s harlot and Juliet’s friend in Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet, Clara in Kevin McKenzie’s The Nutcracker, the soloist D’Jampe girl in La Bayadère, the Shades Adagio in La Bayadère, the Spring Fairy in Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, Amour in Don Quixote, the “giggle girls” in Antony Tudor’s The Leaves are Fading, the second movement pas de deux in Jiří Kylián’s Sinfonietta, and the second and third pas de deuxs from Nacho Duato’s Without Words, among others. She also danced roles in, Othello, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, Coppélia, Le Corsaire, The Merry Widow, The Dream, Rodeo, Theme and Variations, Études, Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1, Lar Lubovitch’s Meadow, Alexei Ratmansky’s On The Dnipro, and Twyla Tharp’s Brief Fling and The Brahms-Haydn Variations,

American Ballet Theatre awarded Cary the prestigious Jennifer Alexander Dancer Award in 2009 for demonstrating excellence, leadership, and professionalism in the Company’s corps de ballet.

Cary appeared in the feature film Center Stage (2000).  Some of her television appearances include PBS Great Performances: The Dream (featured role as the fairy, Cobweb), PBS Great Performances: Swan Lake (featured role in the Dance of the Cygnets and the Flirt Girl), and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Cary began teaching ballet at the Midwest Ballet Academy and is currently teaching at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, Greenwich Ballet Academy, and the ballet academy at Central Park Dance in Scarsdale, New York.  Cary began teaching at the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in the 2023-2024 school year.
