Biography

Patrick Kinmonth works as an artist in many disciplines; as a film and opera director, a writer and critic, architect, painter, curator and creative director. He continues to work internationally as one of the most acclaimed directors, set and costume designers and creators for opera, photography, fashion and dance of his generation. He has worked internationally for many years including curating and designing fashion exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (where he redesigned the Wrightsman Galleries of French Furniture and Decorative Arts after his exhibitions of Dangerous Liaisons and AngloMania) and his celebrated retrospectives for Valentina at the ARA PACIS in Rome, Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and at Somerset House in London.

Kinmonth started directing the productions he had also designed in 2008 and has created more than 10 productions. Before that, he was responsible for many award-winning designs for over 30 opera and dance productions from La Scala, Italy to Beijing, China. His status as a polymath designer, artist and ‘Renaissance Man’ was recognized by the award of World Innovator in Design by The Wall Street Journal in 2014. Projects this year include direction and design of Gassman’s l’Opera Seria for La Monnaie Brussels, creative direction and design of the VOGUE 100 exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, a new ballet of Don Quixote for Staatsoper Dresden and opera productions (in preparation and production) of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Idomeneo, Rosenkavalier and Turandot.
