Philip Feeney

Biography

Philip Feeney studied composition with Robin Holloway and Hugh Wood at Cambridge University and with Franco Donatoni in Rome. He has written extensively for ballet and dance, and is well known as a pianist, working with many companies including Northern Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert, Carlos Acosta, Adventures in Motion Pictures and the Martha Graham Company.

As a composer, he has collaborated with choreographers including Christopher Gable, David Nixon, Michael Pink, Didy Veldman, Michael Keegan-Dolan, Derek Williams, Adam Cooper, Sara Matthews and hip-hop artist Jonzi D. His music has been performed by companies as diverse as English National Ballet, Boston Ballet, Rambert, Cullberg Ballet, Scottish Dance Theatre, Bern Ballett, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, for which he wrote scores for the company’s critically acclaimed Giselle (2003) and award-winning The Bull (2005).

Feeney has written seven full-length scores for Northern Ballet over 25 years, including Cinderella (Gable, 1993); Dracula (Gable/Pink, 1996); The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Gable/Pink, 1998); A Streetcar Named Desire (Veldman, 2001); Hamlet (Nixon, 2008); Cinderella (Nixon, 2013) and Victoria (Marston, 2019). He compiled the score for Cathy Marston’s Jane Eyre, which made its North American Premiere with ABT in June 2019.

Of Love and Rage is his first collaboration with American Ballet Theatre.
