Jack Everly

A graduate of the Indiana University School of Music, Jack Everly joined American Ballet Theatre as Conductor in 1984 and was appointed Principal Conductor in November, 1987, a post which he held until 1997.

Among the world premiere productions he has conducted for American Ballet Theatre are Requiem (Andrew Lloyd Webber-Kenneth MacMillan), The Informer (Marc Blitzstein-Agnes de Mille), How Near Heaven (Benjamin Britten-Twyla Tharp), Giselle (Adolphe Adam-Jean Coralli-Charles Perrot-Mikhail Baryshnikov), and A Brahms Symphony (Johannes Brahms/Lar Lubovitch).  Everly also conducted the Sergei Prokofiev-Kenneth MacMillan Romeo and Juliet in a Live From Lincoln Center PBS telecast starring Natalia Makarova and Kevin McKenzie.  He recently completed engagements in Korea, Japan, and Brazil with the Company.  At the Metropolitan Opera House in the spring of 1997 he conducted the World Premiere of Lar Lubovitch’s Othello to a commissioned score by Elliot Goldenthal.

For PBS, Everly was music director and orchestrator for the “In Performance at the White House” salute to Broadway, starring Itzhak Perlman, Mary Martin, and John Raitt.  Other popular artists with whom he has worked include Carol Burnett, Kevin Kline, Demi Moore, Tom Hulce, and the late Ella Fitzgerald.  Everly also conducted his orchestrations in an evening of lyric theater music for the Vancouver Symphony and a 100th Anniversary salute to Cole Porter for the San Diego Symphony.

Everly’s recent engagements have included performances with the Pacific, Delaware, and San Diego Symphonies, as well as an all-Bernstein tribute at the Ravinia Festival.  For the Lake George Opera Festival he conducted Carousel and The Mikado, and made his Chautauqua Opera debut with Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music during the summer of 1996 when he also conducted the Chatauqua Symphony.  He has just completed his third season as Music Director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s “Yuletide Celebration”.

Everly was engaged by the Baltimore Opera to conduct their production of Kismet, and by Marvin Hamlisch to conduct his pops concerts with the symphony orchestras of Atlanta, Houston, Baltimore, Alabama, Fort Worth, and Dallas.  Mr. Everly recently recorded the “Styne Project” for the TER label (London), creating the complete critical edition of overtures to all of Jule Styne’s great Broadway scores.

In 1995, Everly returned to Broadway to conduct Hello, Dolly! with Carol Channing. Marvin Hamlisch had chosen him to conduct the national companies of A Chorus Line and They’re Playing Our Song, and he guided the musical forces for the Broadway production of The Goodbye Girl, the Marvin Hamlisch/David Zippel/Neil Simon Broadway musical which starred Bernadette Peters and Martin Short.  He also conducted the Broadway revival of Showboat, starring Donald O’Connor, as produced by the Houston Grand Opera.  He recently served as music director for the Alan Menken/Stephen Schwartz Hunchback of Notre Dame animated movie for Disney, and he conducted the film’s soundtrack album as well.

In 1995, Everly arranged the music of Ludwig Minkus for American Ballet Theatre’s most recent production of Don Quixote.
