The Art of Harlequinade

“These characters of Commedia dell’Arte have a basic joy and vitality that is immediate to the viewer as delineated by their costuming,” says Robert Perdziola, scenery and costume designer for ABT’s new production of Harlequinade.  Perdziola, renowned for his sumptuous and award-winning designs for theater and opera, brings his vast talent to the recreation of the ballet’s 1900 design.  Here, he comments on some of his favorite designs for Harlequinade.

“I have designed many Harlequin costumes in my career, and it is always a joy to tackle this. Harlequin, by tradition, is a servant whose costume is made up of ‘patches,’ which imply a lower societal status.  The multi- colored diamond patterning gives a bold energetic jump to the figure.”

“Whereas the ‘patches’ of Act I are scattered in their coloration, for Act II there are only two colors, composed in a regular manner.  Harlequin’s patches are now in a new rhythm of pattern.  The blue and red orange show a vibrant elegance.”

“This Columbine costume is very much based on the original 1900 design, except with a shorter bodice and skirt. The details of the bodice, bunting and skirt appliqué are coquettish and chic, and appear simple.  The appliqué design is actually based on a Worth dress detail from the 1890s.”

“Jesters, like Harlequins, are fun to design.  The design is graphic and direct: triangles, tippets and dagging of soft yellow, salmon, red and gray.”

“I am very much attracted to this shade of cadmium red.  Red can go in so many ways, but here it is sunny and joyous.”

“Here the simplicity of one color, blue, combined with a Renaissance costume line makes for a romantic male figure.”

“This is a favorite because it is simple and stylish with a stroke of my favorite red.”

“These are caricatured versions of male dandies of the early 19th century.  The breeches themselves cry out to be part of a ballet.”
