Daniel de Andrade

Biography

Daniel de Andrade, a native of Brazil, serves as Ballet Master and Artistic Director of Short Ballets for Small People at Northern Ballet in Leeds, England.  He has danced with National Ballet of Portugal, London City Ballet, Zurich Opera House Ballet and Scottish Ballet.  He joined Northern Ballet as principal artist in 1995, where he performed and created many leading roles.  He was appointed Ballet Master in 2003.  With 20 years of experience in the company’s repertoire De Andrade has worked alongside Northern Ballet’s guest choreographers, including Massimo Morricone, Gyllian Lynn, Veronica Papper, Cathy Marston, Hans Van Manen and Jonathan Watkins.

Daniel has appeared as a guest artist with Bern Ballett, Deborah Colker Dance Company, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Royal Academy of Dance, Ballet Central, The Ballet Boyz, National Dance Company of Wales, Estonia Opera House Ballet and Royal New Zealand Ballet.

As artistic director of Northern Ballet’s “Short Ballets for Small People,” De Andrade produced Elves & the Shoemaker.  His choreography includes Glass Canon, Untainted Parallel, Danzando Fellini, and Overworlds & Underworlds. His first full-length ballet, Nijinsky–God of the Dance, for Slovak National Ballet, received its premiere in November 2015.  Northern Ballet presented De Andrade’s full-length ballet The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, based on the novel by John Boyne, in 2017.
