Yuri Uchiumi

Biography

Born in Hokkaido, Japan, Yuri Uchiumi studied ballet at the Kushiro Ballet Academy as a child.  She then went to the Elmhurst Ballet School, England from 1990-1996.  Uchiumi then studied Benesh Movement Notation at the Benesh Institute from 1996-1997.  She joined English National Ballet as a choreologist in 1998 and worked on most of the company’s repertoire and was promoted to Repetiteur in 2002.  While working at English National Ballet, Uchiumi worked as a freelance Choreologist/Repetiteur on many ballets in companies abroad, including Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet, for both the Teatro di San Carlo in Napoli and Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Derek Deane’s The Nutcracker at the Teatro di San Carlo, Napoli, and Shanghai Ballet and his The Sleeping Beauty for the Croatian National Theatre, Zagreb, and Kenneth MacMillan’s The Invitation, The Sleeping Beauty and Manon for Noriko Kobayashi Ballet Theatre in Tokyo.  She left her full time position at English National Ballet in March 2010 to continue her work as a freelance Choreologist/Repetiteur. Uchiumi now lives in Tokyo with her husband and their six year old son.
