Barbara Matera

Biography

Barbara Matera was born in Kent, England and her first theatrical experiences were with the Adelphi Players, Covent Garden, Ballet Rambert, Stratford-on-Avon, and The Old Vic.  After her marriage in 1962, she and her husband Arthur formed Barbara Matera, Ltd., becoming one of the foremost executors of costumes for the theatre, concert stage and films.

Her most recent designs for ballet included Quiet City, Les Petit Riens, Mozart Serenade and Jazz, all for New York City Ballet.  For American Ballet Theatre, Matera executed many costumes including her designs for the Company’s production of Raymonda Grand Pas Classique.

Matera died September 13, 2001, age 72.
