Little Island Week
This week American Ballet Theatre celebrates Little Island, New York City’s newest and most original public park. This 2.4-acre park pier located in Hudson River Park on the West side of Manhattan opened to the public on May 21, 2021.
Little Island features more than 350 species of flowers, trees and shrubs, a 687-seat amphitheater and an intimate stage and lawn space complemented by spectacular views of New York City and the Hudson River. Little Island’s signature look comes from the 132 concrete “tulips” that make up the structure of the park. Each tulip’s shape is unique and has different weight load capacities to hold the soil, lawns, overlooks, trees and guests!
The landscape provides a visually striking and inspiring experience for visitors as they travel through the park. The plantings are varied to provide an environment that will change along with seasons. More than 66,000 bulbs and 114 trees have been planted. Some trees will grow over 60 feet high!
