ABT's National Training Curriculum Presents "Art of Port de Bras" October 21-22, 2017
Two-Day Teacher Training Workshop Led by Cynthia Harvey, Artistic Director of ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School
American Ballet Theatre’s National Training Curriculum will conduct a two-day workshop focusing on the Art of Port de Bras on Saturday and Sunday, October 21 and 22 from 9:30am-6:00pm at ABT’s 890 Broadway studios in New York City. The workshop is open to dance teachers of all levels.
The port de bras, or the carriage of the arms in ballet, is designed to frame and enhance the balletic positions. “Good port de bras can create harmonious accents and can assist in making the most difficult balletic movements appear more coordinated,” explained Harvey. “It can help to create a character and emphasize the full beauty and amplitude of a dancer.”
The two-day “Art of Port de Bras” workshop will feature lectures and demonstrations in the Vaganova and Cecchetti school styles, as well as exercises and discussions led by Harvey and guest instructors Susan Brooker, Hilary Cartwright, Allison Eggers, Irina Kolpakova and Olga Melnikova.
ABT’s National Training Curriculum is a program for the development and training of young students that embraces sound ballet principles and incorporates elements of the French, Italian and Russian schools of training. Under the direction of ABT Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie, the Curriculum aims to assist beginning through advanced teachers in training dance students to use their bodies correctly, focusing on kinetics and coordination, as well as anatomy and proper body alignment. The National Training Curriculum strives to provide dance students with a rich knowledge of classical ballet technique and the ability to adapt to all styles and techniques of dance.
Tuition for “Art of Port de Bras” teacher training workshop is $250. For more information, please call 212-477-3030, Ext. 1168 or visit www.abt.org/education/NTC/TeacherTraining/
