American Ballet Theatre Welcomes Misty Copeland to Board of Trustees

Copeland joined ABT Studio Company in 2000 and became the first Black woman promoted to Principal Dancer in 2015. Her appointment follows her historic farewell performance on October 22, 2025, closing ABT’s 85th Anniversary Fall Season at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.
“Misty Copeland has changed the face of classical ballet through her artistry and her commitment to broadening access to the arts,” said Susan Jaffe, Artistic Director of American Ballet Theatre. “We are grateful she will continue contributing her perspective and experience to ABT in this new capacity.”
As a Trustee, Copeland will help guide ABT’s long-term strategic priorities, support the organization’s financial and operational strength, and champion ABT’s mission, values, and impact, including ABT RISE (Representation, Immersion, Sustainability, Excellence), the Company’s commitment to representation, belonging, and holistic well-being across education, training, and performance.
“ABT has been my home for nearly twenty-five years,” said Misty Copeland. “It’s where I grew up, found my voice, and learned the transformative power of art. I’m honored to support ABT in this new role and help advance its mission for future generations.”
