Amanda Cobb

Biography

Amanda Cobb began as a gymnast attending the Junior Olympics for floor and beam. She started ballet training at age 12 under Mary-Beth Cabana at Ballet Tucson in Tucson, Arizona. Summers were spent at the School of American Ballet, Gus Giordano, and in France with Alexandra Wells. At 15, she moved to New York on a special full scholarship to study with Alvin Ailey. Cobb returned to Arizona to continue her education at the University of Arizona, receiving her B.F.A., focusing on Dance and Exercise Science.

Cobb’s professional dance career spanned over twenty years. She was a principal with Ohio Ballet, and Ballet Tucson before appearing with American Ballet Theatre where she toured nationally and internationally performing in some of the most prestigious theatres. She later joined The Washington Ballet. Some of her principal roles included Kick Girl in Balanchine’s Rubies,  Choleric in Balanchine’s  The Four Temperaments,  Partisan Woman in Jooss’s  The Green Table,  Leto in Balanchine’s  Apollo,  Queen in ABT’s  Swan Lake, Juliet in Jörgen’s  Romeo and Juliet, The Chosen One in Aiello’s  Rite of Spring,  and featured in the ABT film of Swan Lake. Cobb danced the ABT classical repertory and worked with or performed works by many legendary choreographers, including Makarova, Agnes De Mille, Anthony Tudor, Kevin McKenzie, Petipa, Michael Fokine, Balanchine, Lar Lubovitch, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Gelsey Kirkland, Twyla Tharp, Choo San Goh, Mark Morris, Nicole Fonte, Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Anna-Marie Holmes, Kurt Jooss, Frederic Franklin, Christopher Wheeldon, Cynthia Gregory, Wayne Eagling, Annemarie DeAngelo, and more. In addition to an impressive professional career, Cobb has taught ballet, dance, GYROTONIC® and Pilates since 1997. She is also certified in the ABT National Training Curriculum and on faculty at the ABT Gillespie school since 2015.
