Christopher Newton

Biography
Born in Leicestershire, Christopher Newton trained locally and won the Leverhulme Scholarship to The Royal Ballet School. He joined The Royal Ballet in 1954 and danced a variety of roles including the Rose Adagio Cavalier and the King in The Sleeping Beauty, the Fencing Master in The Rake’s Progress, the pas de trios in Ballet Imperial, Jason in Sylvia and the Concentration Commandant in Valley of Shadows. From 1970-1973 he taught dance notation and repertory at the International University in San Diego. He retuned to The Royal Ballet in 1973 and was appointed Notator and later Répétiteur, Ballet Master and, in 1988, Artistic Coordinator
Newton has mounted ballets for many other companies and has staged his own production of Swan Lake, Act III for the Pennsylvania Ballet. He retired from The Royal Ballet in 2001 and now works internationally as a freelance teacher, mainly staging the Ashton repertory.
