David Carp
Biography
David Carp joined the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra as Music Librarian in 2008.
Carp’s first experiences in orchestra librarianship were with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Long Island Philharmonic, Westchester Philharmonic, and the Stamford Symphony Orchestra. An accomplished music preparer, researcher and arranger, he also worked in the music libraries of New York City Ballet and New York City Opera.
Active as a music typographer in the 1980s, Carp’s credits include engraving the piano/vocal score for Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George and a number of his songs. He is in demand as a creator of reduced orchestrations, which have been performed by Austin Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Virginia Opera, Finnish National Ballet and Opera, Washington Ballet, and Sacramento Ballet, among others.
From 2006 to 2022, Carp managed the library of Themes and Variations, a leading supplier of film music for concert use. Additionally, he maintains a large personal collection of opera and ballet music, which constitutes a major resource for opera and ballet companies, symphonic groups, and educational institutions.
Carp developed an interest in Latin American music and dance during his 15 years as a producer at WNYC-FM and has interviewed over 200 Latino musicians and dancers, and co-produced “The Palladium Ballroom: Home of the Mambo” for National Public Radio.
