Galina Solovyeva

Biography

Galina Solovyeva, a native of St. Petersburg, graduated as a Costume and Scenic Designer from the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography, Russia, in 1975. She was the resident costume designer for the Mariinsky Theatre (formerly, Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre), St. Petersburg from 1975; she immigrated to the USA in 1992. Her international career includes over 100 designs for ballet, opera, and theatre including the Mariinsky, Bolshoi, and Mihailovsky theaters in Russia, Ballet Internationale, New York City Ballet, Het Nationale Ballet in the Netherlands, and the Japan Ballet. Her costume credits for ballet and opera include Othello, Eugene Onegin, Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire, The Bolt, The Nutcracker, Firebird, Romeo and Juliet, Semyon Kotko, and Swan Lake. In collaboration with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival from1996 to 2001, she designed costumes for Uncle Vanya, Force of Nature, Rosmersholm, and Enter the Guardsman. Solovyeva was honored with a Barrymore Award nomination in 2000 for outstanding costume design, the Golden Sofit, the highest theatre award of Saint Petersburg in 2001 and 2008, and the Nika, the main national film award in Russia in 2001.
