Mark Jonathan has had extensive experience as a lighting designer of drama, opera, dance, ballet, musicals and arena productions. His lighting designs for the Royal Ballet include Cinderella (which was also broadcast by the BBC) and Sylvia at the Royal Opera House and he has also designed extensively for David Bintley at Birmingham Royal Ballet including Beauty and the Beast, Far from the Madding Crowd, Protecting Veil, Giselle, The Seasons, The Sleeping Beauty (for Sir Peter Wright), Powder (for Stanton Welch), The Prospect Before Us, Two Pigeons, Enigma Variations. 5 Brahms Waltzes, Scene de Ballet and Dante Sonata. Other dance work includes Antonia Franchesci‚Äôs Up from the Waste; A Little Princess for the London Children‚Äôs Ballet and Landschaft und Erinnerung and Exilium in Stuttgart.
Jonathan was Head of Lighting at the Royal National Theatre in London from 1993 to 2003 where his designs included Honk! (Olivier Award Best New Musical), Skylight (Olivier Award Best New Play), Titus Andronicus and The Waiting Room. His drama designs have also been seen throughout the UK at Britain‚Äôs leading repertory companies and most recently for The Witches in the West End and Breathing Corpses at the Royal Court Theatre.
Musicals include Peggy Sue got Married, Sweet Charity (West End) and Marlene (West End, Paris and Broadway). He has also lit operas in Britain, Belgium, United States, Israel, France and Germany and most recently Ariadne auf Naxos for William Friedkin and Falstaff at the Los Angeles Opera. He is currently designing Samson et Delila in Tel Aviv with forthcoming commitments in Europe and the United States. His opera designs were selected to be part of the British entry in the 1999 Prague Quadrennial.
