Mark Jonathan is internationally renowned as a lighting designer of dance, drama, opera, musicals, and arena and ice productions all around the world. His numerous designs include productions at Birmingham Royal Ballet, Buxton, Chichester, Edinburgh Festival, Garsington, Glyndebourne, Grange Festival, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, National Theatre, Royal Court, Royal Exchange, London Children’s Ballet, Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Ballet, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, London’s West End, and many regional theatres.
Overseas he has designed in Aarhus, Antwerp, Banff, Barcelona, Berlin, Bordeaux, Charleston, Copenhagen, Dublin, Ghent, Florence, Helsinki, Houston, Johannesburg, Kuwait, Los Angeles, Madrid, Mexico, Munich, New York, Oslo, Paris, Potsdam, Spoleto, Stockholm, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Toulouse, Vienna, and Washington.
Jonathan was head of lighting at the National Theatre, London, from 1993-2003. He was nominated for the Drama Desk award for Outstanding Lighting Design for Prometheus Bound (Classic Stage) in New York. He received a Knight of Illumination nomination for Lulu (WNO). He won the Knight of Illumination for Vanessa at Glyndebourne. He is an honorary fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
