Natalie Weir

Natalie Weir was born in Australia, and has been choreographing professionally for 14 years. She was trained at the Ann Roberts School of Dance in Townsville, and completed an Associate Diploma in Performing Arts at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. She was a founding member of Expressions Dance Company and was offered her first choreographic commission at the age of 18. Weir has worked extensively throughout Australia, creating work for most of the country’s major classical and contemporary dance companies, including The Australian Ballet, The West Australian Ballet Company, Expressions Dance Company, Australian Dance Theatre, and Dance North. Miss Weir was also Choreographer in Residence for the Queensland Ballet. In 1999, Weir created His Weeping for American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company, and 2000, Bitter Moon. Her ballet Jabula was given its Company Premiere by American Ballet Theatre in October. Later that same year she created a new work for the Houston Ballet. In 2002, she was one of four choreographers (the others were Ann Reinking, David Parsons and Stanton Welch) who collaborated on the dance work A Tribute to George Harrison, an ABT World Premiere saluting the late ex-Beatle during the company’s City Center season. For two years Weir has been awarded a Fellowship by the Australian Council, towards development to become an artistic director of a contemporary dance company, as well as in recognition of her choreographic achievements so far. Most recently, Weir has been appointed Choreographer in Residence for The Australian Ballet, and in that capacity created her first full-length ballet, Mirror Mirror, for that company.
