Sholem Dolgoy

As one of Canada’s senior lighting designers, Sholem Dolgoy has over 30 years experience in lighting design. Originally from a theatrical family background, Dolgoy has worked in architectural consulting, dance, exhibits, film, music, opera and video lighting.

From 1978 to 1984, Dolgoy was company lighting designer for The National Ballet of Canada. His design credits for the company include Ann Ditchburn’s Mad Shadows, Constantin Patsalas’ The Rite of Spring, Frederick Ashton’s The Two Pigeons, James Kudelka’s Hedda and Natalia Makarova’s La Bayadère, Act II. He also designed the lighting for the company’s numerous choreographic workshops.

His lighting design for the National Ballet’s premiere of John Cranko’s Onegin won critical acclaim. He later designed the lighting for the Emmy-nominated television production of Onegin and for productions by the Royal Danish Ballet and the Boston Ballet.

Recent projects include the Inco Gallery of Earth Sciences, Discovery Gallery, and the special event Egyptian Art in the Age of the Pyramids at the ROM, as well as feature lobbies for Famous Players in Toronto, Sudbury and Edmonton.

Dolgoy has extensive experience with corporate entertainment and product promotion events. Projects include: Toyota Canada, Chrysler Canada, Nortel both in Europe and America, and Zellers. He is the lighting designer for the annual Christmas display at Toronto’s Eaton Centre. Dolgoy also teaches theatrical lighting design and production at Ryerson Polytechnic University.
