Skylar Brandt Awarded 2013 Princess Grace Foundation-USA Dance Fellowship
Skylar Brandt, a member of American Ballet Theatre’s corps de ballet, is the recipient of a 2013 Princess Grace Award. The award, a Dance Fellowship, was one of eight fellowships granted in the Dance and Choreography category. The annual Princess Grace Foundation-USA awards were announced in New York City on August 7.
Skylar Brandt began her classical ballet training at Scarsdale Ballet Studio in Scarsdale, New York. She attended the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre from 2005-2009 under the direction of Franco De Vita. Brandt spent five summers at ABT’s New York Summer Intensive, was a National Training Scholar from 2006-2009 and also received the Bender Foundation Scholarship in 2009. Brandt was a silver medalist at the Youth American Grand Prix in 2004 and 2008. As a student, she performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in The Royal Ballet School’s Cinderella, ABT’s Le Corsaire, Coppélia, The Sleeping Beauty, and ABT’s 2009 Spring Gala. She joined ABT II in 2009 and became an apprentice with the main Company in November 2010. She joined the corps de ballet in June 2011. Her roles with the Company include an Odalisque in Le Corsaire, a flower girl in Don Quixote, the Canteen Keeper, the Chinese Dancer and one of the Nutcracker’s Sisters in Alexei Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker, a little swan in Swan Lake and roles in Mark Morris’ Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes and Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room.
The Princess Grace Foundation-USA, a public charity, was formed after the death of Princess Grace in 1982. The Foundation awards scholarships, apprenticeships and fellowships to emerging theater, dance and film artists to assist with career development. The 2013 winners will receive their awards at the annual black-tie Princess Grace Awards Gala, in the presence of HSH The Princess of Monaco, on October 30, 2013 in New York City.
