Sung Woo Han was born in Seoul, South Korea. He began his ballet training at the Sun-hwa Arts Middle School in his hometown and entered Korea National University of Arts at the age of 17. Han has won numerous awards including Beijing International Ballet Invitational Competition (at which he received the Grand First Prize), International Ballet Competition-Varna, and Youth America Grand Prix. In 2011, Han placed the second prize from Prix de Lausanne and received a full scholarship at the Royal Ballet School.
Han joined American Ballet Theatre as a member of the corps de ballet in December 2013 and was promoted to Soloist in September 2022. His repertoire includes a Cavalier in Cinderella, the Grand Pas de Deux and Gamache in Don Quixote, Lysander in The Dream, the peasant pas de deux in Giselle, Persian Man in The Golden Cockerel, Grand Pas Classique, Drosselmeyer, Spanish Dance, and Russian Dance in Alexei Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker, Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet, Puss-in-Boots in Ratmansky’s The Sleeping Beauty, the Act II pas de deux, Benno, Spanish Dance, Neapolitan Dance in Swan Lake, Jaseion in Sylvia, Sylvia Pas de Deux, Don Zucchero in Whipped Cream, leading roles in Études, Monotones II, and Theme and Variations, and featured roles in Bernstein in a Bubble, Petite Mort, Raymonda Divertissements, and Sinfonietta. He created a Fairy Cavalier in Ratmansky’s The Sleeping Beauty.
Han has created three works for ABT Incubator, the Company’s choreographic workshop: Beneath the Conscious (2018), Perspective of Glory (2019), and Death and Life (2021). In 2021, he choreographed Beyond Belief for ABT Studio Company.
