On October 26, 2019, the Company will celebrate Herman Cornejo’s 20th anniversary with American Ballet Theatre. The evening features Balanchine’s Apollo, a piéce d’occasion, and a World Premiere by Twyla Tharp, choreographed in celebration of Cornejo’s anniversary.
“Mr. Cornejo – different in every role – is the most miraculous male dancer before the New York public, and the most complete, complex artist in Ballet Theater’s roster.” – The New York Times
George Balanchine’s neoclassical masterpiece depicts Apollo’s birth, his interplay with the muses of dance, poetry and mime, and his ascent to Mount Olympus. The ballet was Balanchine’s first major work with Igor Stravinsky and marked the start of a legendary artistic collaboration.
A tango choreographed by Ana María Stekelman and set to music by Francisco Canaro, El Chamuyo was first performed by the Cornejos in 1998 at a gala dinner honoring Argentina on the Grand Tier of the Metropolitan Opera House.
This brand new work by Twyla Tharp is her first World Premiere for American Ballet Theatre in 10 years — celebrating Principal Dancer Herman Cornejo’s 20th anniversary with ABT.
