A program of legendary genius. The performance features three leading choreographers from the past and present: the iconic George Balanchine, the groundbreaking Twyla Tharp and the brilliant ABT Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky.
Created for Ballet Theatre in 1947, this George Balanchine classic is one of his most iconic works, requiring shimmering technique and heroic stamina. Set to Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky’s glorious score, Theme and Variations evokes the golden age of Russian classical ballet.
This brand new work by Twyla Tharp is her first World Premiere for American Ballet Theatre in 10 years — celebrating Principal Dancer Herman Cornejo’s 20th anniversary with ABT.
A plotless divertissement, the ballet features archetypal characters such as Snow, Frost, the Faun and the Rose. Alexander Glazunov composed the music for The Seasons for Marius Petipa to use in his original 1900 ballet—one of the last productions Petipa choreographed prior to his retirement. This new version features original choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, who has chosen to retain almost all of the original character names, though the monikers are designed to serve more as abstract ideas than literal representations.
