From revered classics to modern masterpieces, ABT celebrates its rich and diverse repertoire in this trio of dynamic works. Included in this program are the 75th Anniversary performances of George Balanchine’s tour de force of Neoclassicism, Theme and Variations, set to the sumptuous Tchaikovsky score, Jessica Lang’s ZigZag, a jazzy and vibrant piece that celebrates the legendary career of Tony Bennett, and the New York Premiere of a new work by Alonzo King.
Created for Ballet Theatre in 1947, this George Balanchine classic is one of his most iconic works, requiring shimmering technique and heroic stamina. Set to Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky’s glorious score, Theme and Variations evokes the golden age of Russian classical ballet.
This new work by Alonzo King, set to music by jazz artist and composer Jason Moran, received its World Premiere at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in March 2022.
ZigZag celebrates the legendary career of Tony Bennett, using both his songs and his visual artwork to highlight in the authentic humanity of his vocal performances.
ZigZag is co-commissioned by Abu Dhabi Festival.
