Matthew Murphy was born in New York City, grew up in Missoula, Montana and is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts. While there, he studied under Warren Conover and Melissa Hayden and danced leading roles in The Sleeping Beauty, Les Sylphides, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, as well as George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Scotch Symphony and Stars and Stripes. He received numerous scholarships to summer programs including the School of American Ballet, Houston Ballet and American Ballet Theatre.
Murphy joined ABT’s Studio Company in September 2003 and the main Company in April 2004. His repertoire with Company includes the Old Soldier in The Green Table and a Carnival Dancer in Othello. He created a leading role in Pretty Good Year.
